“The execution of Uladzislau Kavalyou und Dzimitry Kanavalau produces evidence that the human rights situation in Belarus is deteriorating. Aleksandr Lukashenko ignored the EU calls for a moratorium on the death penalty even after human rights experts had expressed doubts whether the two young men had been guilty. Therefore it is my opinion that Aleksandr Lukashenko is not worthy being a host to the 2014 Ice Hockey World Championship. The Ice Hockey tournament should be suspended as long as human rights and freedom in Belarus are restricted.”
